Scheduled executions

Your help is needed. Troy Davis is scheduled for execution on Sept. 21, in Georgia and Duane Buck is sheduled for execution today Sept. 15, in Texas. Please contact The Georgia Pardon and Parole Board (404) 656-5651and ask they rule not to execute Mr. Davis. Ask the District Attorney Larry Chisolem of Chatam County to withdraw the warrent. (. Consolidated Social Work Services Volunteers will be assisting Brandon Ellington, Ms. E, and other members of Team Ellington April 30th, 9:00 am, at 3836 Chestnut, Kansas City, Missouri. Criminal Justice Task Force Lobby Day

Members of the Criminal Justice task Force Family Advocacy group, and supporters will travel to Jefferson City March 1, 2011 to meet with Legislators to seek support of the Long term sentencing/Life without parole bill. To be readily identified all participants are asked to wear their yellow T-shirts with the CJTF logo.

A fight worth fighting

Darryl Burton, Joyce Ann Brown, Dennis Fritz, and Ron Williamson (Deceased, Dec. 04), are just four out of thousands who are innocent in prison or have been exonerated. Criminal Justice Task Force/Family Advocacy Group

The CJTF/FAG will sponsor a meeting with Legislators, December 14, 2010. Location: Church of the Good Shepherd, 4947 NE Choteau Drive, Kansas City, Missouri. 6:30 pm. The CJTF/FAG has worked on getting changes to the long term sentencing/ Life without parole for 10 years. The group is asking for support from the community as well as those who have a love one serving a long term sentence. Please come out and support this very important issue.

Voting in Missouri with a criminal conviction/Information provided by American Civil Liberties Union.

If you were convicted of any felony in a state or federal court, you are barred from voting: (1) while incarcerated (2) while on probation (3) while on parole.

If you were convicted of a misdemeanor, you only lose the right to vote while incarcerated. If you were convicted of a felony or misdemeanor relating to election laws, you are permanently disfranchised unless you receive a pardon from the Governor.

Reform of Crack cocaine law

Congratulations to Families against mandatory minimums, Julie, all staff and members. President Obama signed the reform bill into law yesterday. I am not sure if this law will be retroactive, but we will probably hear something on that soon. When I hear something I will post it.

Exonerations

The Innocence Project just reached it's 250th exoneration. Yes innocent people really do go to prison, and some of them have been executed. That seems reasonable to assume given the current numbers of innocent people who have been exonerated, because they were in fact not guilty.

HB 1757

The Criminal Justice Task Force, Family Advocacy Group has great news! As of Jan. 21st. HB 1757 has been filed. This bill will amend life without parole sentencing. There are 27 co-sponsors of this bill.

S 714

Families Against Mandatory Minimums, (FAMM), reports the Senate Judiciary Committee approved S. 714. The National Criminal Justice Commission Act S. 714 introduced by Senator Jim Webb (D-Va), would create a blue- ribbon, bipartisan panel to review the criminal justice system from top to bottom. The bill is important because any examination of the criminal justice system will inevitably lead to review of sentencing policies and mandatory minimums.
