SSI benifits

Several people have contacted our office about social security disability and S.S.I. benefits. Rep. Runions just telephoned me and also Rep. Brandon Ellington. Budget's are being worked on and I will post the results as soon as possible.

Long term sentencing

Received two new cases. Long term sentencing. One was a juvenile. Has served 23 years of a life without the possibility of parole. The other has served 27 1/2 years of a life without the possibility of parole for 50 years. Work continues.

Grand Opening

The Grand opening of the Chestnut Avenue Family Resource Center and Reading Room will be Saturday May 7, 2016, from 2:00 P.M. until 4: 00 P.M.

Model Block

Clean up day in the neighborhood. UMKC Professors, students, Kamen's Angels, and Consolidated Social Work Services Inc. board members raked yards for seniors today. A bag of fruit was provided to each senior, Work on developing the Model Block Project continues.

KKFI Radio

Mrs. Carol Edwards and I were guest on the Every Woman Show, KKFI 90.0 F.M. with Amy and Sharon. We talked about problems and solutions of aging. We discussed housing, codes, youth and families, school closings and how that affects neighborhoods, relationship between elders and young people and aging in place. Family Resource Center and Reading Room

Renovation continues at the property for the Family Resource Center and Reading Room. Painting has been done, trim work is about finished. Strawberry wishing well has been built, gutters and down spouts are in place. Kitchen, bathroom, pantry, and back porch is being done. Trash has been hauled, bushes cut and hauled. Utilities are on. Legislative shut down

On May 6, 2014 over 300 people traveled to Jefferson City to stand up for human dignity and the rights of all individuals to be fairly represented within the legislature. We went with a message and that message was delivered. We stood up for changing the conversation, and making dignity and respect for all a part of the legislative process, and as a result we shut down the assembly. Kansas City Political Action Task Force

Work with the Concerned Clergy has begun. We will be working on criminal justice issues and care of the elderly, with the primary focus being on in home care. What is being provided? Is it effective? More later as we progress. Collaboration and networking, building bridges of exchange.

Long term sentencing bill

The Kansas City Criminal Justice Task Force, Family Advocacy Group asked for assistance with their long term sentencing bill. HB 1505 and SB 681, Anyone who meets certain criteria after serving 15 years will be eligible for parole consideration.
