Although debtors prisons have been illegal sinse the 1800's, several States are engaged in arrest of persons who for various reasons cannot pay a bill. This has happened in Kansas City, Missouri. If you are experiencing problems because of loss of job, high medical bills etc. you may want to contact a legal service, and talk with someone about your situation.
